Barnacle State Park Notebook
This tropical hardwood hammock provides our community with a quiet retreat from the busy city life of Coconut Grove just on the other side of the edge of its entrance. Ralph Middleton Munroe built his "Bay View Villa" at the end of the path in 1891 facing Biscayne Bay. It became the Peacock Inn. The structure is affectionately called "The Barnacle" because of its octagonal center room. Behind the house is a grand backyard where concerts, yoga, Shakespeare, and other cultural events take place.
I enjoy the walk down the path and to the bay taking in the quiet sounds of birds and the bay. It is the perfect spot to pause and to see how the early settlers of Coconut Grove lived and imagine how peaceful it must have been.
